![]() You can also use what is known as a Skimboost to ride by a teammate that has spun out to give them a boost as well. During a race, both your teammates and yourself leave a yellow trail behind that you can ride on top of to charge what is known as a Slingshot move, which will give you a boost as soon as you leave the trail. This adds a level of synergy into the races that can be quite helpful.Įven more useful in Team Races are the moves you can pull off with your teammates. Not only can you do this, but your teammates will also be transferring items to you if you accept them as well. If you are in first and get let’s say an Orange Rocket Wisp, you can transfer this item box to a teammate instead that could get more usage out of it. This can be done in a few different ways, besides the obvious of taking out opposing teams with your items. Team Races themselves work very similarly to how a normal race would, though you are also trying to help your teammates place highly as well. The teams do matter too, as the various characters have different stats to work with in the race. Each team is made up of a Speed-Type, Technique-Type, and Power-Type, so figuring out which of the three you want to use is very important. This means you cannot mix and match the characters, so you are stuck with teams such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles or Shadow, Rouge, and Omega. ![]() The game comes with 15 total characters to choose from, which are broken down into five different teams. While Team Sonic Racing does offer the ability to race with normal non-team rules if you would like, the main focus of the game is obviously the team oriented racing style. ![]() Similar to Mario Kart, this helps you make a comeback if you have fallen back in the pack, but it also leads to some serious rubberband AI at times as well. There are a number of different Wisps for you to pick up and use, with your place in the race helping to decide what types of Wisps you can get. Wisps are the games equivalent of items, which you can grab and use in a race. The basics of a general kart racer are there at the core in Team Sonic Racing, with the right trigger being used to accelerate and left trigger being used to brake or drift. There can be some performance drops here and there when a lot if going on within certain races, though they are pretty limited for the most part thankfully. There are some pretty cools design layouts implemented across many of the the game’s 21 tracks, which look pretty good in action. teammates can be frustrating at times.Team Sonic Racing is not the type of game you’d be expecting incredible visuals from, but they are pretty solid throughout the game. Weak selection of characters, as only Sonic characters are presented. Team Racing gameplay is new and satisfying. The game seems to function farely well, besides the occasional bug when I can't see the story mode map. The graphics are about as good as you'd expect for a Sonic Kart Racer, and the background art on the stages is beautiful and lively. The sound is very good, as always in the Sonic Racing series, but it has been better in the past with more music variety. It's very underwhelming for a AAA studio. Matchmaking is extremely problematic, and just trying to play with friends or randoms will prove troublesome at most times. If by chance you can even connect to a lobby it will most likely crash immediately. The online is a complete mess in the game. racers on your team cost you the win, but other times they will keep up very well. The team racing gimmick has many pros and cons. Another new feature was detailed car customization, which is alright, but the menus can be a headache to maneuver because everything loads so slowly. There's a new story mode, but it's kind of bland as the cutscenes are just still images of characters speaking to each other. Switching to just strictly Sonic content took out a lot of the fun and variety. ![]() One of my biggest complaints was the lack of SEGA characters, as in this game only Sonic characters were featured. The controls are rather smooth, and there are a decent amount of tracks and modes. It doesn't quite have as much flair as Mario Kart does, but there are certainly many worse kart racers out there. The racing gameplay is about the same as the first two games in the series. Team Sonic Racing is the third installment of the Sonic Racing series and the first on the Xbox One.
